IBM G40, no more

Permalink 10/Sep/2005 12:58 , Categories: Hardware

So after many years of excellent service, I no longer have the IBM G40.

On the flip side, it means that I am now in the market for a laptop... Recommendations anyone ?

I need something that is portable, has a 'decent' punch w.r.t processing ability, good hdd ( 7200rpm if possible ) and a decent display ( > 1024x768 resolution ).

Well we have disucssed this quite often; I personally am a fan of Dells - they are pretty solid and support is excellent. Also was a fan of Toshiba's till recently. The new office laptop is quite fast and good, but battery life and recharging sux. Maybe you should get the Qosmio - droool.

The Toshiba-Q is way too much money, and its basically a media center you carry around with you everywhere :) but the display, gota love that display...

Dell look interesting, they have some excellent deals on at the moment ( as always ), will scan through their offerings. The only problem I have with Dell's is they tend to look and feel like commodity h/w. the IBM's on the other hand ( the new T series looks and feels amazing! )...

And Dell dosent do AMD64's - if I am going to be spending a chunk of money at this stage, might as well get an AMD64. Lots of options, lets evaluate them. Might just end up postponing the Laptop purchase for a few months till after x-mas this year.

Try these: Alienware Area-51m 7700
and:
Sony VAIO A60091 Notebook
VGN-A60091
And yes - they are expensive.

hey Avi, the Alienware is a waste of money, firstly with its P-4 and 17" display, i cant imagine the battery life really being worth while. It seems to be the kind of machine that would make sense if it was the only machine you had around, and needed to host entertainment, processing and desktop roles into one. And it seems rather wasted to an extent, since its running on a very slow hard drive. Plus, there is no alienware in the UK.

The VAIO A60091 on the other hand, also a sweet machine, seems to be an outright desktop replacement, with one problem - its a Centrino chip ??? so it kinda like a mix'ed bunch ( and the Sony brand price that add's 30% to cost is really not worth it )

By the way, all these ATI Mobility cards used in some of these laptops are really not worth it, similar spec'd nVidia cards easily give you better quaity and higher performance ( or so it seems ) at either the same price or cheaper.

And my first pref is still an AMD64 chip, good portability, long battery life. I dont really care much for the MultiMedia stuff on the device.

maybe you should also consider acer laptops with AMD 2800+ and abt 40 gigs 7200 RPM 512 mb ram
and superdrive.
back in india its abt 35 K !

Thanks.!

isnt that Acer a Sempron or something like that ? I am not going near one of those.... and I was rather looking for something in the region of a AMD64 3500+ or thereabouts.

60 GB at 7200 RPM - I didn't think that was slow!

No, not slow - but it will be a huge drain on resources like battery and heat generation / sound levels etc. So it makes sense to have that kind of storage on a portable, if thats the main desktop and is the only machine you have around. Add a 17" display and a P-4 chip under there, and you can see where the 'potability' of that is going.

I've seen a few Sager AMD64's around, that seem to be excellent bang for the buck, and have used one for a few days as well. Now, if only I could find someone to sell me one of those in the UK!

I agree with you - P4's run hot and drain batteries in a hurry. I also concede your point about "portability". They are not truly portable. I haven't used a AMD64 Notebook - don't know much about them. Does AMD make a chip specifically for the notebooks? Let me know if you want something from here - I might be heading your way sometime in January.

IBM T4x series, in my opinion. Whatever configuration suits you best.

I've a T42p--a solid 3 hrs of battery life, along with a mobile 1600x1200 screen. I can actually get work done.
