package trimming at centos.karan.org
For the CentOS-4 yum repo at http://centos.karan.org/ I've started implementing a package trimming policy, only the latest 2 versions of every package will be retained, the rest dropped.
This move should not effect any of the users, since yum itself only sees ( as well as up2date ) the most recent rpm for any package. The reason I maintain the last 2 versions, is in case the most recent package breaks something - people still have the option to roll back ( manually ) to the last released version.
The only one place where I can see a problem is where people have directly link'd to package versions pages ( like http://tinyurl.com/qtrlf ) , those pages are no longer going to be there for the older versions. For now, i suppose its all going to be 404' responses, while I work out howto handle these issues server side. What I suppose could be one workaround is a php based 404 handler that tries to parse out the rpm name from the url and redirect to the most recent version of the same package. This might also be a good reason to revisit php after many many years of being php-free :)
Anyway, 120 megs of updates going online right now on the i386 tree, x86_64 to come by Tuesday night.
Enjoy!
