CentOS 5 - First install
Just finished installing the first distro tree for what will become CentOS 5 x86_64. And I have to say this - it rocks! There are a lot of new features that are going to be loved by everyone out there. But first, a few words about what is going on.
Rather than just bang out the distro, which we could have done a few weeks back, we decided to work on the back end infrastructure for the distro first. Putting in place a distributed build system, package tracking, composer scripts, various means of build testing, build verification etc. And while we were doing this, we were using live centos-5-beta sources to prove the system works ( side note: so far, the tree has been rebuilt about 12 times, 3 times each on i386/x86_64 and 6 times on ppc/ppc64 ). So while the release has gotten delayed due to this extra work, I hope this pays off in the long term, with faster updates and a better tested release process.
Back to the issue of when is release going to happen ? The short answer is : when its ready. The long answer is : very soon now, but we want to release to a select few testers first. Once they give it the thumbs up, we'll make a public release available to everyone. If you want to get onto this list of testers, get in touch with one of the CentOS developers.

One thing I would ask is that I would really appreciate weekly status posts to the CentOS list. I'm really, really looking forward to CentOS 5 and I don't want to be constantly nagging folks about it.
That sounds like a really good idea and along the lines of what I was thinking about. What I might do is instead, setup a rss feed somewhere that people could subscribe to and get some form of news on centos-5 status. And we might even be able to carry on with that feed in the future to keep people updated with developments etc.
Let me pass this idea around and see what the other developers think about it.

more seriously I have installed FC6 here at work just waiting for the CentOS 5 to show up ... so I'm also interested in it!

Dont have the time to play with other distributions (not so happy with FC6 on my notebook).
Hardware includes but is not limited to HP Proliant 320 G4, Sun v20z, Dell 850, Dell SC1425, Lenovo x86_64 WS, Thinkpad T41/60.
Especially testing on Proliant would interest me/us.
So we'd really like to get out hands on CentOS 5 so we can get this happening. Can you please add me to the list of testers.
I even would like to participate on the extras
ps, I will try to come on the FOSDEM event also
Mario,
I can test on the following system:
CPU: intel core 2 duo (e6600)
mobo: G965
http://www.intel.com/products/motherboard/DG965MQ/index.htm
and
Sun X4100 amd64
I can test on my box
HP Proliant ML150G3 Core 2 Duo
Luc
but RHEL 5 + Xen is not for productive environments, at least not in 64 bit on
CPU: intel core 2 duo (e6600), mobo: G965
there is nothing secret in the testing, and we've had no reason to consider centos5 unstable anywhere. Do you have some bugzilla numbers for your problems and what was done to fix them ?
so far where Xen is concerned, the el5 xen and tools included are perhaps the most stable and usable implementation in any distro yet
The box would not boot the first Fedora 6 xen kernels but finally is booting the 2.6.19-1.2895 xen kernel. I tried to install the Centos 4.4 Server CD under Fedora 6 xen but after the installation when I reboot the installation window closes and I can not start the Centos VM from xen.
Is it still looking like the end of the month for release (that was the last i saw on the lists)?
Cheers
Nick
Is RHEL5/CentOS5 still including StarDict, as RHEL5 Beta1 Client Beta1 had?
http://stardict.sourceforge.net/ is a free, GPLed dictionary framework, _however_ most of the English and German dictionaries proposed for download are *illegally* databases stolen from Merriam-Webster's Collegiate, Oxford ALD, Longman DCE, Collins Cobuild, Duden, etc.
The Chinese guy who developed StarDict has no legal right to label as GPL anything else but the code, and I am worried that Red Hat has chosen to include StarDict (even with no databases) in RHEL5.
"Stealing" a codec is not a theft. Stealing a dictionary database *is*.
with "secret" I joked a bit,I expected that middle Jan we will have an alpha version, at least to get used on it.
There is absolutely no announce from the centos - when, what & so on, even no invitation for the users to start test the betas from the RH.
"unstable", just in regards of xen(virtualization)
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-5-manual/release-notes/RELEASE-NOTES-x86_64-en.html
I had some additional small glitches except in the Known Issues, but I believe they will be correct by the time Final arrive.
I didn't succeed to install 64bit windows for example.
The Red Hat Enterprise "Linux Virtualization Platform" was actually "Cluster Platform" :p even no shadow from Xen.
About XEN:
I agree that "the el5 xen and tools included are perhaps the most stable and usable implementation in any distro yet", but its just not enough.
Most of the people ignored this statement http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/08/01/redhat_yes_xen/.
6 months ago - RH: "We believe the Xen project is not currently stable enough for production deployment."
I am really pleased with what RH are currently doing for the Xen development and RH/CentOS (work/private) is my choice when going Xen.
I believe 5.1 will be the real Xen RH ;)
Xen 3.0.5, the new libvirt and the RH virt console look really promising.
Best Regards
Would be happy to test pre-release.
I have both x86_64 and i386 envirnoments available.
