CentOS-5 Beta Status update
Hi Guys,
There seems to be a rumour going around that there will be no CentOS-5/Beta. I just want to state this officially that the rumour is wrong! There will most certainly be a Beta and even a Release Candidate before the Final is released.
Another issue I'd like to clear up is that while we are going to try and make sure that the CentOS-4 to CentOS-5 upgrade path exists, that will only be in CentOS-5 Final, and there is no guarantee that you can move from Beta to RC to Final. While we would like to make sure that it happens, we cant be sure and therefore do not look at putting CentOS-5/Beta on any production machine.
And finally, when is CentOS-5/Beta going to be released ? Very soon. I've just got finished with a few test installs for i386 and will be passing this onto our QA team, as soon as they clear it ( essentially making sure that we have met the upstream release requirements and we have a clean package tree ) the installable tree will be made available on http://beta.centos.org/ and an announcement will be made to that effect on the centos-announce list.

RHEL5 beta is released as a server and a client version.
I am presently a Fedora user, but I feel CentOS is a great alternative on desktops as well, as we use desktops for doing our work and important stuff, and we don't feel like re- installing every year, sometimes...
I feel it would be nice to add a wiki with all the tips to configure CentOS for a "regular" desktop, with all the plugins and the multimedia things...
Good job, guys. go on !
