5.2 Release update

Permalink 20/Jun/2008 00:19 , Categories: Linux

We found a very major issue with the last set of ISOS for 5.2 meaning I had to redo the distro isos today. We should start seeding the mirror network in the next 24 hrs time, so release should still be 23rd June, give or take a day or so.

UPDATE: 2008-June-23 : We found yet another issue with the x86_64 tree, so while some of the updates are now syncing out, please wait for the release announcement before pulling packages and the isos.

I need Evolution for my RHEL v5.2 Server! Whoever decided to remove it from Server v5.x had to be sitting on his brains at the time.

The whole world is waiting with baited breath. I wish there was a way for me to get the final bits right now - I need this stuff really, really badly.

Karanbir, I installed CentOS 5.2 for x86_64 when it was available on mirror.centos.org. May I ask what the problem was and if a "yum update" pulls in your fixes?

Pirast,

once the final release is out, make sure you yum update, check for 'yum list extras' and handle any package that is reported. You should be fine that way, its just a bit of manual work.

Guys, were working on this pretty much flat out... release should not be too far now. As soon as there are enough mirrors with the tree's we will announce and release the distro.

CentOS guys, pull the trigger on this release. 9Down and Torrent Master are offering the CentOS DVD ISO for x86-64. Get this release on yum updates and get the ISOS on mirrors.kernel.org .

People are warez-ing/bit-torrenting x86_64 DVDs at this point - which are probably stale.

Whats going on now is "Not a Good Thing(TM)."

Much appreciation for the great software & awesome project.

Hello,

I've noticed that release 5.2, as it appeared on various mirrors, has no LiveCD among its isos.

Please, should we expect a LiveCD ? Is it scheduled soon, if all ?

The LiveCD is very important - we use it as a quick test for hardware configurations (network cards, video cards, etc.) and/or to report hardware profiles via smolt.

Regards,
Răzvan

Răzvan,

the LiveCD is normally released about 2 weeks after the main distro. No reason why that should not be the case for 5.2 as well.

Mick,

I am not sure why people publish torrents in those places, specially when they are more likely to get much much more b/w on the torrents using the official tracker. Or is there something else that I am missing in this situation ?

Karanbir, thank you *very much* for the info above and for all your effort !

I'll wait for the LiveCD - no hurry.

As for the distro, I've looked around at the mirrors (I live in Romania). Some of them have the old (wrong) DVD image for x86_64, others don't have it at all...

My concern is not about the distro being released sooner, but for the guys picking the wrong image.

Thanks again,
Răzvan

Many many sincere thanks to the CENTOS team for bringing higher than upstream quality releases to the public.

You folks are a literal Godsend.

@Karanbir Singh

I think what is going on is that the millisecond an ISO is fetchable from any mirror, while others still had the 5.2 has a hidden directory, people hunger for the release and "warez it." I was starting a torrent because mirrors.kernel.org/centos/5.2 was still locked, and then you made a comment that the x86_64 had an issue, and decided to wait until mirrors.kernel.org/centos/5.2 was open for download. But the problem is that stale ISOs might be torrented for those who are anxious.

This method of distribution is really extreme flattery, as there is a huge CENTOS following thirsting for releases.

Again, many thanks for the awesome better-than-upstream work you do.
