Slow perl on CentOS 5 : potential fix

by Karanbir Singh Email

Hi,

We all got lots of news and feedback about the perl bless/overload performance issue after the noise started by Vipul on his blog.

There are updated perl packages for CentOS-5 at http://people.centos.org/z00dax/bz379791/ which address the performance issue. Some of the guys on the centos-devel list were kind enough to test this for us and the general impression seems to be good. You can read the thread here.

One important thing to keep in mind with these packages is that I will remove them once an updated perl is available from upstream ( based on reports, thats only likely to be in time for 5.3 though ). The other thing is that these packages are marked with a .centos tag so its easy to work out what perl you are using. If you previously had perl from any non CentOS repo - you might need to manually install these new rpms.

Feedback is always welcome.

Update: 18th Sept 2008 Packages were released into the main distro from upstream earlier today to address this issue. The CentOS-5 rpms are also released, so I will be removing these temporary packages from people.centos.org within the next day.

CentOS5 rpms release - fine! But any idea what to do when running CentOS4? Can't find any update for this release, but it's also affected by this bug. :-(

If someone wants to publish a set of patches required on CentOS-4, I'd be happy to look at them.

About CentOS 4 : this issue does not affect CentOS 4.
